Your purchase price is not your cost. Landed cost — what a pair actually costs once it is in your warehouse — is what you should be pricing from.
The three terms you will be quoted
- FOB: you pay from the port of loading. Freight, insurance and destination charges are yours.
- CIF: the price includes freight and insurance to your destination port. Duties and inland delivery are still yours.
- DDP / door-to-door: delivered to your address with duties handled. Highest quoted price, fewest surprises.
What to add to the FOB price
- Freight (air vs sea — the difference is often 3–5×)
- Insurance
- Import duty and VAT in your country
- Port, terminal and customs-broker fees
- Inland delivery to your warehouse
A quick example
A FOB price of $1.80 per pair on 3,000 pairs sounds cheap until freight, duty and clearance add a visible percentage on top. Always ask for a CIF or DDP quote as well and compare total cost, not unit price.
The mixed-container advantage
Per-shipment costs fall on the whole container, not on each style. Loading many styles into one booking spreads those costs across more sellable units — see mixed containers.
